Looking for a NEW FRIEND? Someone who will listen to your troubles and make you
feel better when your blue? Someone who doesn't care if you messed up at work or forgot an
important engagement? How about a special friend--one with paws and fur? There is nothing
quite like the unconditional love and affection of a pet--and we have a variety of pets at
the Clear Creek/Gilpin County Animal shelter who need homes and are just waiting to give you all
of their time and attention. If you have ever adopted an animal from the shelter you know
that you will instantly become a hero to a warm, loving pet.
If you have special requests--a dog that likes children, one that enjoys long walks, a
cat that likes to curl up on your lap--just let the staff know. They are very familiar
with all of these animals. Unlike a blind purchase at the pet store or through the papers,
you have the advantage of getting a pet from folks that already know what they are like
and are anxious to match the right pet with the right owner. If we don't have what you are
looking for, we can still keep you in mind and let you know what comes our way in the
future. . .but. . .we have some great critters right now, and we thought you might like to
get to know them:
Please call the Clear Creek/Gilpin County Animal Shelter (303)
679-2477 to be introduced to these animals.
Pet Care Tips
- Do not leave your animal in the car in the heat. Even with the windows rolled down it
only takes a few minutes for the temperatures to rise to over 100 degrees. Serious brain
damage and death can occur within 5-10 minutes.
- When you train your dog you are helping to do something about the number of unwanted
former pets residing in animal shelters. Chances are, if your dog is well behaved, he or
she will remain your companion for life!
- When housebreaking your dog, DO NOT rub his/her nose in his/her mistakes. You risk
infection to the dog and encourage stool consumption.
- If you want your dog to be a good car rider you must condition him from
puppy hood or if
you adopt an older dog as soon as you get the dog. If the only time your pet rides is for
vet visits, he may never lose his carsick tendencies or fears.
- It is extremely dangerous to have your dog ride in the back of a pickup truck! The dog
can easily fall out onto the road with a sudden jolt, dirt and debris can fly into your
dog's ears, eyes and nose. Tying your dog into the truck bed creates a noose if he is
jolted into the air. If your dog must ride in the back of a pickup truck, the dog should
be placed in a kennel and secured so the kennel does not slide around or be jolted out of
the bed of the truck.
- Choose either newspaper or the outdoors for your pet's elimination location and stick to
it. Don't offer both as alternatives as this confuses the dog and prolongs the training
period.
- One of the benefits to adopting an older animal from an animal shelter is that the
animal has most likely been housebroken and trained already.
